Bereavement Ministry

Here at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, we have a wonderful variety of ministries which are evident when we gather around the altar to worship God. By virtue of our baptism in Christ, some of us are called to serve as funeral coordinators.

When a family experienced the death of a loved one, our Bereavement Ministry is there to represent our community by reaching out and offering support in their time of need. Our coordinators assist in a variety of ways by working together with the Priest, musicians, and funeral homes to meet the various ministry requirements for a scheduled funeral. We help the family choose readings, music, and prayers while gathering precious memories about their loved one.

The Funeral Coordinator attends the funeral to offer support to the grieving family and works hand in hand with the sacristan, altar servers, and lectors. Working with the sacristan, the coordinator prepares the church and ensures that everything is in place for the celebration of the liturgy. Following the liturgy, the coordinator makes sure that the church is reset with everything returned to its proper place.

Meaningful funeral ceremonies make a significant difference in how families channel their grief toward health and healing. Here at St. Francis, we know families will need support, compassion, love, hope, healing, and understanding.

People who have experienced and worked through the experience of grief, and have the gifts and talents to accompany others on the journey are invited to explore the possibility of becoming a funeral coordinator. If you are interested, please contact Mary Caneta, our funeral coordinator.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
